Every year more than thirty-five million people visit Canada, the second largest country in the entire world after Russia. Home of the Mountie, maple syrup and the iconic Niagara Falls, the country certainly has plenty to offer tourists. Gavin Manerowski took a trip to Canada to sample some of the local delights and visit some of the best known landmarks on the planet.
No trip to Canada would be complete without viewing the Niagara Falls, often cited as one of the most romantic spots in the world. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock here each year to view the cascading waters of the Niagara River. The Falls themselves are comprised of three separate waterfalls, the Horseshoe Falls, the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls. A popular spot for adventurous honeymooners, the Falls were further popularized after the 1953 release of the film Niagara starring Marilyn Monroe, and more recently were used to provide footage for the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel At World’s End. Many artists have attempted to recreate the stunning visual impact of the waterfalls, yet nothing compares to the experience of the real thing. Canada is responsible for well over three quarters of the world’s output of maple syrup, the sweet syrup made from the sap of maple trees. Throughout March and April there are several maple syrup festivals in and around Ontario, where maple farmers open their gates to visitors and put on tours of the sugar bush and offer a wide variety of maple syrup based delights for sampling. Many of the festivals also feature live music and children’s entertainment, making for a great family day out.
